Pakistan Explores Digital Product Passports to Boost Textile Exports

by Sara Ahmed

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan is moving toward modernizing its textile export sector with the potential introduction of a Digital Product Passport (DPP), a step aimed at enhancing sustainability, transparency, and global compliance.

Rana Ihsaan Afzal Khan, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Commerce, recently met with executives from Octans Digital Pvt. Ltd., part of Interloop Holdings, to discuss the role of digital tools in driving environmental and waste management initiatives in the country’s textile industry.

The DPP concept, which tracks product information across the supply chain, could help Pakistani exporters meet growing international demands for transparency and sustainable production. Drawing on his experience with one of Pakistan’s top textile exporters, Ihsaan evaluated both the opportunities and the hurdles that could arise during the adoption of this digital framework.

Describing the initiative as “of primary importance,” Ihsaan highlighted the need for collaboration between government agencies, industry stakeholders, and tech partners to ensure effective implementation. He also suggested that the government might establish a dedicated committee to develop a practical roadmap for rolling out the Digital Product Passport.

Industry experts note that such innovations could strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global textile market, where traceability and environmental responsibility are becoming increasingly vital. The meeting underlined the growing recognition that sustainable growth and public-private cooperation are key drivers for the sector, which continues to be a major pillar of Pakistan’s export economy.
