Punjab is preparing to welcome 100 additional electric buses as part of the provincial government’s push to modernize public transport. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif confirmed the move, highlighting the administration’s focus on affordable and efficient travel for everyday commuters.
The new buses, sourced from Shanghai, are currently en route and expected to arrive in Pakistan in the coming weeks. Once operational, they will extend the reach of modern public transportation to all districts of Punjab by December.
Speaking about the initiative, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the service aims to provide “special transport for the common man” at an accessible fare of just Rs. 20 per ride. She added that safety has been a key consideration in the fleet’s design, noting that each bus will feature CCTV cameras to help protect women passengers and other commuters.
In addition to security, passengers can expect enhanced comfort, with air-conditioning and climate control installed across all vehicles. “InshaAllah, these state-of-the-art buses will soon serve people in every corner of Punjab,” the Chief Minister assured, signaling a significant step toward modern, sustainable urban mobility in the province.
Transport experts say that expanding electric bus networks could reduce congestion and pollution in major cities, while making daily travel safer and more comfortable for residents.
