Peshawar Poised for PSL Comeback as Stadium Renovations Near Completion

by Sara Ahmed

Cricket enthusiasts in Peshawar may soon witness top-flight action once again, as Pakistan Super League (PSL) CEO Salman Naseer has signaled optimism about the Imran Khan Stadium’s readiness to host league matches.

The stadium, a historic landmark for the region, has been under extensive renovation for several years. Despite being the designated home ground of Peshawar Zalmi, it has yet to host a PSL game, leaving local fans eager for a return of competitive cricket.

Javed Afridi, owner of Peshawar Zalmi, has long campaigned for matches to be played in the city. However, throughout the league’s ten seasons, the PSL has consistently opted to host matches elsewhere. Naseer’s recent comments suggest that situation may be changing.

“We have recommended additional upgrades to the stadium and are committed to transforming it into a venue capable of hosting international matches,” Naseer explained. “Once these enhancements are complete, we hope to bring PSL action to Peshawar.”

The stadium hosted its first cricketing event in years today: an exhibition match between Peshawar Zalmi and a Legends XI aimed at raising funds for flood-affected areas across Pakistan. The event not only marked a symbolic return of cricket but also provided a practical assessment of the stadium’s remaining needs before it can meet international standards.

Restoring PSL matches to Peshawar would be a significant milestone—not just for the Zalmi franchise, which regards the stadium as its spiritual home, but also for cricket development across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Fans could soon enjoy a vibrant new venue on the T20 map, enhancing the league’s reach and local engagement.

With renovations advancing and PSL leadership showing clear support, Peshawar’s long wait for high-profile cricket may finally be coming to an end.
