Petrol Price Stays Flat, Diesel Sees Slight Hike

by Sara Ahmed

The federal government has kept petrol prices steady but adjusted the cost of high-speed diesel (HSD) upward for the second half of September.

A notification issued by the Finance Division on Sunday confirmed that petrol will continue to sell at Rs. 264.61 per litre, while HSD has been increased by Rs. 2.78, bringing the new rate to Rs. 272.77 per litre.

This marks a reversal from the last price review earlier in the month, when diesel was reduced by Rs. 3 per litre to Rs. 269.99, while petrol prices remained unchanged. At that time, the government also trimmed kerosene by Rs. 1.46 and light diesel by Rs. 2.40, fixing their rates at Rs. 176.81 and Rs. 159.76 per litre, respectively.

Why It Matters

Petrol prices hold significance for private motorists and daily commuters, while high-speed diesel directly impacts transport and agriculture, making its adjustment more influential for freight costs and food inflation. The slight rise in HSD could therefore put mild upward pressure on overall transportation costs in the coming weeks, even though petrol consumers are unaffected this time.
