PIA Expands International Partnerships with SriLankan Airlines Deal

by Sara Ahmed

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has entered into a new agreement with SriLankan Airlines to provide technical and engineering support for the carrier’s flights to Lahore.

Engineering Support for Regional Flights
Under the arrangement, PIA’s Engineering & Maintenance division will handle maintenance services for SriLankan Airlines’ four weekly flights operating on the Lahore route. The deal highlights PIA’s growing role in offering ground and technical support not only to local operators but also to international carriers using Pakistani airports.

Boost for PIA’s Engineering Business
PIA officials say the agreement underlines the credibility of the airline’s engineering arm, which has been increasingly tapped by foreign airlines. The division is already servicing multiple domestic carriers, and partnerships with international airlines are seen as a way to strengthen PIA’s foreign exchange earnings — a key priority for the struggling national carrier.

Context: Why It Matters
For PIA, which has faced financial challenges and restructuring pressures, diversifying revenue streams beyond ticket sales is crucial. Engineering and maintenance services represent one of the few areas where the airline maintains a competitive advantage, thanks to its established infrastructure at major airports. Collaborations like this not only bring in revenue but also help position Pakistan as a reliable hub for regional aviation services.
